Gum Arabic (Acacia Senegal)
Gum Arabic is a complex polysaccharide that is a true gem. Gum Arabic heath benefits are truly countless as it is still an area of active research. Gum Arabic is incredibly rich in fibers and prebiotics that promote the growth and activity of the healthy bacteria in the gut which in turn boosts the health of the entire body. That coupled with the low caloric content of the Gum makes it suitable as a weight loss supplement. Furthermore, Gum Arabic has (pound to pound) more calcium than milk, more magnesium than spinach and more potassium than bananas. In fact, Gum Arabic is one of the most calcium rich foods in the world.
Medical benefits
Gum Arabic might be able to help in protecting the liver from toxins. In a 2003 study done in King Saud University, it was found that Gum Arabic can help protect the liver from the harmful effects of acetaminophen (the active chemical in many pain killers like Panadol) and may even help prevent liver damage in case of an overdose. Moreover, it was observed in a 2013 study conducted in Tanta University, that Gum Arabic can protect the kidneys from the damage that oxidative-stress inducing chemicals like mercury can cause. That might be due to Gum Arabic’s ability to decrease oxidative and nitrosative stress.
Health benefits
Butyrate, a short chain fatty acid produced as a by product when the beneficial bacteria in the gut feeds on the soluble fibers in Gum Arabic , enhances the water absorption in the colon. This property of Butyrate could be a key in the reported headache relife effects of Gum Arabic. More research is needed however to establish a clearer relationship between Gum Arabic intake and headache relief.

Intestine
With so much prebiotics cramped in Gum Arabic (82% of its weight), the gum will make the good bacteria that live in the gut grow. These good bacteria will multiply as a result giving the whole body a boost of health. This will lead to better digestion, keeps the bad bacteria population in check, and makes Gum Arabic especially effective in helping with constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, food poisoning and leaky gut syndrome. Also, the gum will help the good bacteria to recover after the use of antibiotics. Additionally, after the good bacteria feed on gum, they will create a byproduct called short chain fatty acids (SCFA) the most important of which is an acid called Butyrate. Butyrates are important as food for the cells lining the colon. Without butyrates for energy, colon cells die. Moreover, Butyrate is also thought to protect from colon cancer, reduce colon inflammation (a condition common in IBS), have a role in regulating blood sugar and blood pressure levels, help with leaky gut syndrome , help in boosting the immune system and help with the absorption of minerals.
Heart
Hypertension (high blood pressure), is a major risk factor for many diseases including stroke, chronic kidney disease, and heart disease. Gum Arabic has been found to reduce blood pressure in many studies, and thus helps to slow down the progress of renal failure disease, and protect your heart. Moreover, Gum Arabic causes the good bacteria in the gut to produce Butyrate which some studies have shown that it can help in lowering the bad cholesterol level in the body.
Kidney
Chronic kidney disease (chronic renal disease), is a conditions where there is a gradual loss of kidney function over time. The two main causes of chronic kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure, which are responsible for up to two-thirds of the cases.
Traditionally, the people of Sudan have used Gum Arabic to treat kidney disease for a long period of time. Now, a number of studies have concluded that Gum Arabic not only slows down the progress of chronic kidney disease, but also reduce the patient’s need to go through blood dialysis. It does this by lowering the nitrogen waste in your blood and by lowering your blood pressure and thus protecting your kidneys. In one cause in Iraq, an End Stage Chronic Kidney Failure patient survived more than a year without dialysis using a treatment of Gum Arabic and following a low protein diet (This was done under the surveillance of doctors and researchers in a hospital setting)
Pancreas
The pancreas produces a hormone called Insulin that allows the body to use sugar (glucose) from carbohydrates for energy or to store glucose for future use. There is a growing scientific evidence that Gum Arabic can help in controlling the sugar level in the blood due to its high fiber content. It’s documented that soluble dietary fibers play an important role in regulating blood sugar levels in those with type 2 diabetes. Moreover, people with diabetes have an increased risk to develop chronic kidney failure. This increased risk might be lowered by using Gum Arabic according to a 2006 study by University of Tübingen in Germany.
Immune system
Gum Arabic is packed with prebiotics which might boost the white blood cells and killer T cells. A study found that kids who ate yogurt with a prebiotics supplement, often got sick less frequently than kids who don’t.
Weight loss
Gum Arabic can help in weight loss. With high amounts of dietary fibers, low calories content and zero cholesterol, Gum Arabic is a very useful supplement that can help with weight loss. The high fiber content makes the user feel full making them less likely to snack. In one study in Sudan, Gum Arabia alone reduced the body fat of the study subjects by 2.8% using a volume of 30g per day of Gum Arabic.
Cancer
There is a very clear relationship between high fiber intake and lower risk of colorectal cancer. This is due to the fact that fibers move the harmful carcinogens out of your guts faster. Furthermore, Gum Arabic is full of calcium, which also lowers the risk of colorectal cancer by controlling the multiplication of epithelial cells lining the colon. In fact, in a 2010 study in Germany, Gum Arabic reduced the number of tumors by 70% in rats that were fed Gum Arabic, after they were given cancer causing chemicals. This makes Gum Arabic very useful in helping to protect from colon cancer.
Teeth
Tooth decay can occur when tooth enamel is lost due to an imbalance of the demineralization and remineralization phases. Gum Arabic can protect the Enamel layer of your teeth by supporting the remineralization process. Furthermore, studies have found that chewing Gum Arabic is better than sugar free gum in reducing plaque due to its antimicrobial properties. These properties make Gum Arabic a good supplement for gingivitis. In fact a 2012 study in India found that Gum Arabic is as good as 1% chlorhexidine gel (medicine used to teat gingivitis in helping patients).
